Here are several good reasons for buying local foods more often:
- Buying local foods gives us the opportunity to know better the origins of our food from farm to store shelf and helps to create stronger links within communities
- Eating local, seasonally available foods allows us the opportunity to eat the freshest, most nutritious food available and reduces the need for harmful food additives and preservatives
- Supporting our local farmers and businesses results in a healthier local economy with increased self sufficiency and helps to preserve market diversity
- Distribution of local vs. imported foods results in less pollution, less packaging, fresher products, better traceability and less risk of food contamination
Feel free to add to the list!
