Hi everyone,

I'm curious to know if anyone in the community has recommendations for eating a diet that promotes thyroid health. I just began treatment for hypothyroidism this week, and I'm looking for diet tips beyond the usual "eat well, exercise, drink water, get sleep, etc." Perhaps some foods to seek out, others to avoid, anything like that.

And I'm brand new to the community, so if I missed an earlier post, feel free to just direct me to an archive.

Thanks!
Stephanie

Hi Steohanie,
Iodine rich foods support your thyroid. Anything from the sea.....animal or vegetable. You could also look at buying a supplement if you're not keen on eating seaweed :)
I blogged about hypothyroidism some time ago. Check out the post here

Do you think you might try L-Tyrosine? I've had people tell me they've had really great results from supplementing it......

Stay away from peanuts and soy foods, as they inhibit iodine production. Coconut oil really helps. Check out The Coconut Diet.

Hi Stephanie,

You can also take a drop of iodine on your tongue once a day. Choose a brand that has kelp as well to help avoid imabalance, and only do it for 3 weeks at a time, then take a 1 week break so the body stays in balance.

You can add small strips of kombu or other seaweeds to soups and salads and even mash into other foods in small bits for extra iodine.
